How should Doctoral Students Conduct Academic Writing and Publishing? The Third Session of the Doctoral Students' Research Capability Enhancement Project at the Business School successfully Launched Its Third and Fourth Lectures
On the afternoon of November 20, 2023, the Business School, Central University of Finance and Economics held the third and fourth lectures of the third session of the Doctoral Students' Research Capability Enhancement Project in the MBA Center's auditorium. The forum featured Dr. Li Jiapeng from the Department of Strategy and Dr. Wei Chuang from the Marketing Department as guest speakers to provide in-depth explanations on academic writing and publishing for doctoral students. Over 40 doctoral students from the 2022 and 2023 grades attended the event. Associate Professor Dou Chao, Director of the Doctoral Program at the Business School, organized and prepared for this event. The Doctoral Students' Research Capability Enhancement Project is a special initiative by the Business School to enhance the research abilities of its doctoral students. The project is structured as a combination of “lectures + guidance,” encompassing all essential aspects of academic research. It operates on an annual basis, with each session comprising multiple lectures that cover various professional directions, including research topics, literature reviews, research design, methodologies, thesis writing, paper submission, and revision.

The third lecture was hosted by Associate Professor Dou Chao, Director of the Doctoral Program at the Business School. Mr. Dou provided a brief introduction of the speaker, Dr. Li Jiapeng. Dr. Li Jiapeng, a graduate of Tsinghua University, is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Strategy. His primary research interests include institutional entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial teams, government-business relations, and imprinting theory. He has participated in national key research and development projects and has published multiple papers in significant journals such as Journal of Management World and Emerging Markets Finance and Trade.
Dr. Li Jiapeng provided a detailed explanation of the theoretical framework of strategic management and introduced to the doctoral students in attendance how to apply specific theories in academic research. He also explained how to select suitable research methods based on their research questions, thereby expanding and deepening the students' theoretical foundations and research perspectives. Dr. Li Jiapeng also shared his qualitative research on “institutional entrepreneurship” and conducted a case analysis, providing the students with valuable first-hand research experience.
The fourth lecture was chaired by Assistant Professor Li Jiapeng, who introduced the academic background of the guest speaker, Dr. Wei Chuang. Dr. Wei Chuang, a graduate of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, is currently an assistant professor in the Marketing Department of the Business School. His primary research area is consumer behavior, with a focus on consumer services and product experiences, as well as decision-making science. He has published multiple papers in significant domestic and international academic journals such as International Journal of Research in Marketing and Journal of Business Research.
Dr. Wei Chuang began by highlighting the importance of mental preparation before academic writing and emphasized the necessity of creating a writing outline. He provided a series of practical writing tips and suggestions. Furthermore, Dr. Wei Chuang provided detailed guidance on writing different sections of an academic paper, such as the introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and discussion. He led the participants to gain a deeper understanding of the acceptance rates, peer review process, and submission guidelines of top academic journals. Dr. Wei Chuang offered valuable advice on how to respond to reviewers' comments.
The two guest speakers explained how to improve the quality and efficiency of academic writing in a way that was easy to understand, which helped the doctoral students deepen their understanding of the academic writing and publishing process. This will better assist the doctoral students in overcoming challenges in academic writing and enhance the impact of their research findings. The students in attendance also actively engaged with the teachers, discussing the challenges they faced in their research. This interactive session facilitated the sharing of valuable knowledge and the transmission of experience.
