At 10:30 AM on December 22, 2023, the Business School held the Twenty-ninth Session of Academic Forum of Excellence 2023 of the lecture series of the Business School for the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Establishment of the Business School and the MBA Education Center in Conference Room 615 of the Main Teaching Building of the Xueyuan South Road Campus of Central University of Finance and Economics. The lecture invited Senior Lecturer Lin Xiaoshuang from the University of South Australia as a guest speaker. More than twenty people, including faculty, doctoral students, master students, and undergraduates, participated in this event.
The conference was hosted by Associate Professor Zhang Hongyu, Director of the Department of Organization and Human Resource Management at the Business School. Before the lecture officially began, Zhang Hongyu introduced Mr. Lin Xiaoshuang's resume in detail. Lin Xiaoshuang is currently a senior lecturer at the Business School, University of South Australia. She holds a PhD from the Australian National University Business School and has served as a lecturer at the University of Southampton and Aston University in the UK. She has also received a social science research fund from the British Academy. Her research focuses on humble leadership and servant leadership, employee voice and silence, and psychological contracts. Her articles have been published in Journal of Organizational Behavior. Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Vocational Behavior, British Journal of Management, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, etc. Her paper on humble leadership won the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Leadership Group at the 2019 Annual Meeting of Academy of Management. Lin Xiaoshuang has been reviewing papers for many management and industrial psychology journals. Ms. Lin currently teaches leadership courses for the University of South Australia's local MBA, as well as organizational leadership, business ethics and change management for undergraduates.
The theme of Ms. Lin Xiaoshuang's lecture was “Potential in Humble Leadership and Subordinate Leadership: A Perspective of Expected Status.” The study proposes that humble leadership refers to leaders who have a clear understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, encourage subordinates to contribute their wisdom, and are willing to learn from their subordinates' strengths. The prevailing view is that subordinates with humble leaders tend to imitate the leader's humble behavior, which in turn improves team performance. Unlike when subordinates contribute to collective performance, the research explains when subordinates use humble leadership behaviors to improve their own leadership potential. Based on the expected status theory, it is found that humble leadership improves subordinates' perception of their work status, thereby enhancing their leadership potential. Subordinates with individualistic values are better able to use humble leadership behaviors to enhance their leadership potential.
Upon completion of the sharing, the participating teachers and students actively discussed topics such as measurement methods, questionnaire collection, submission experience, academic experience and career planning sharing in response to the theme of Lin’s lecture, which further promoted the in-depth exchange on academic research.
