The 21st Session of the Business School’s Excellent Academic Forum Lecture Series in 2022 Is Successfully Held
Date :2022-12-04

At 1:00 p.m., November 29, 2022, the Business School of Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) held the 11th Session of the Excellent Academic Forum Lecture Series in 2022 online through Tencent Meeting. Dr. Mei Danqing, an assistant professor of finance at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, was invited as the keynote speaker of this lecture, and more than 20 people (including teachers, master and doctoral students, and undergraduate students) attended this lecture.

Associate professor Dou Chao of the Department of Finance and Financial Management of the Business School presided over this meeting and introduced Dr. Mei Danqing’s resume. Dr. Mei Danqing is currently an assistant professor of finance at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. He received a PhD in finance from Columbia University Business School in 2020. Over the past years, Dr. Mei's papers have been published in famous journals such as Journal of Finance and Journal of Law and Economics.

The topic of the lecture delivered by Dr. Mei Danqing is “Mapping U.S. - China Technology Decoupling: Policies, Innovation and Firm Performance”. In this research, the measures of technological decoupling and dependence between the United States and China are constructed on the basis of the merged patent data. The first two decades of this century witnessed a steady growth in technology integration (or less decoupling), but in the first (second) decade, China's dependence on the United States increased (decreased). The companies protected by China's policies for emerging industries of strategic importance were less decoupled from the United States and got cash flow and valuation, but without improvements in innovation output/quality or productivity. After the US sanctions, the sanctioned industries and their downstream companies performed poorly, but the degree of decoupling from the US also decreased. However, the companies in the upper reaches of the sanctioned sectors have significantly improved their productivity and produced more breakthroughs and better quality innovation explorations.

After the sharing, the attending teachers and students actively participated in the discussion about the topic of the lecture delivered by Dr. Mei Danqing, and Dr. Mei Danqing answered their questions in an enthusiastic manner, further deepening their academic exchanges.

The “Excellent Academic Forum” is an academic exchange platform established by the Business School to fulfill the mission of “contributing new management knowledge”, which focuses on cutting-edge theoretical issues and organizational development dilemmas in the discipline of business administration and the Chinese enterprise management practice, and brings together frontier ideas and innovative ideas in China and abroad, so as to explore Chinese solutions for China's social and economic development.
